World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, will be marked in 2025 with the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution” and the global slogan #BeatPlasticPollution. For the second time, the Republic of Korea will host this international event, with the main programs held in Jeju Province.

Plastic pollution is one of the world’s most critical environmental challenges. Every year, around 11 million tons of plastic waste enter aquatic ecosystems. This pollution not only harms wildlife but also introduces microplastics into the human food chain. The social and environmental costs of this crisis are estimated at $300 to $600 billion USD annually.

Plastic pollution exacerbates the triple planetary crisis: climate change, loss of nature and biodiversity, and pollution and waste. The estimated 11 million tons of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems annually add to this burden. Additionally, plastic use in agricultural products leads to the accumulation of microplastics in soil through wastewater and landfills. The global cost of this pollution continues to grow, straining both nature and economies.

The environment is a valuable and shared legacy for all generations. From the air we breathe to the water we drink and the soil we cultivate, our lives depend on nature’s balance and the health of the planet. However, in recent decades, human activities have triggered major crises such as climate change, natural resource pollution, biodiversity loss, and the spread of non-biodegradable waste.
