Currently, over 100,000 NGOs, including 30,000 charitable organizations, operate in the country, significantly contributing to solving social problems and assisting government agencies in addressing issues related to poverty, deprivation, illness, and more.
Despite the close alignment and connection between the goals and programs of NGOs, particularly charities, and the government sectors responsible for welfare and poverty alleviation, any disregard for the non-governmental and public nature of NGOs, or any undermining of their independence from the government, can disrupt their effective functioning and role.
Although there have been some improvements and significant developments in reducing government oversight in the NGO sector, many legal challenges and regulatory weaknesses persist. These include the lengthy and stringent processes for establishing and registering NGOs, stringent oversight by some authorities in reviewing qualifications and declarations, legal overlaps and duplication in registering non-governmental organizations, the lack of strong and effective mechanisms for transparency and reporting, and more.
In a situation where the elected president emphasizes the need for cooperation, empathy, and public trust as prerequisites for the success of the fourteenth government, it is expected that the new administration will witness a serious transformation in the path of constructive interaction between the government and NGOs. This will depend on overcoming the legal and regulatory challenges and bottlenecks that hinder the activities of NGOs.
