The first “World Giving Index” report emerged in 2009 during the global financial crisis. The 2023 report focuses on the role of religion in charity, the impact of charitable acts on happiness, and how migration affects charitable behaviors.
In addition to global philanthropy insights, the report evaluates three key aspects:
Have you recently assisted a stranger or someone unknown?
Have you donated money to a charity recently?
Have you volunteered for a charitable organization in recent months?
The 2023 World Giving Index, based on data from the previous year, offers a unique perspective on global generosity trends, highlighting countries where people are most engaged in charitable activities and aid provision to local communities.
In this evaluation, 147,186 respondents from 142 countries answered the survey questions conducted by Gallup.
The Most Generous Countries in the World
Indonesia tops the 2023 World Giving Index as the most generous nation, a Muslim-majority country where 61% help strangers, 80% donate money, and 60% volunteer. Zakat practices significantly influence Indonesia’s charitable ranking. Ukraine, Kenya, Liberia, the United States, and Myanmar also rank among the most generous.
Iran’s Global Standing
Iran ranks 40th in the 2023 report with a Giving Index score of 45. Sixty-seven percent of Iranians helped strangers, 53% donated money, and only 13% volunteered, reflecting a lower inclination towards voluntary charitable activities.
Low Voluntary Charitable Engagement in Iran
Iran’s scores in the World Giving Index highlight a lower inclination towards financial donations and volunteerism, consistent with national studies.
A 2022 national survey, supported by the Kheir Mandegar Institute at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, reveals low engagement in volunteering and financial donations to charities. The survey also indicates that nearly 60% prefer individual charitable acts, citing distrust in charitable organizations, with less than 30% conducting activities through such entities.
The preference for individual charity underscores challenges faced by numerous small and large charitable organizations in gaining public trust. Key factors include inadequate information dissemination on aid effectiveness, lack of transparency in expenditure reporting, and economic hardships among families.
