International Day of Persons with Disability

Approximately 1.3 billion people, or 16% of the global population, experience some form of disability. While significant progress has been made in removing barriers for persons with disabilities, much more needs to be done to address their needs. People with disabilities, just like everyone else, should have the opportunity to work, receive education, and actively participate in society.

The United Nations has designated December 3rd as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. On this occasion, we aim to shed light on the primary needs and concerns of individuals with disabilities—issues that are often overlooked by many in society.

What Are the Primary Needs of Persons with Disabilities?

A person with a disability may face physical, auditory, visual, cognitive, mental, or emotional impairments that limit their everyday life. In Iran, 11.5% of the population consists of individuals with disabilities—a significant demographic.

Addressing the financial, psychological, and social needs of this group is an area that has received insufficient attention. Below, we explore some of the most critical concerns and needs of people with disabilities.

Employment of Persons with Disabilities in Companies and Organizations

In first-world countries, 80–90% of people with disabilities who are at working age, are employed. But what about the statistics in Iran? In second-world countries, the employment rate for individuals with disabilities is around 50%, while in third-world countries, it barely reaches 10%.

Discrimination in hiring between people with disabilities and others is clearly evident in various organizations and companies. Add to this the lack of job opportunities tailored to the needs of individuals with disabilities, and it becomes clear why many persons with disabilities are deprived of participation in society and the workplace.

Improving Public Transportation Systems for Persons with Disabilities

Everyone in society benefits from public transportation systems, and many individuals and families rely on them daily. But to what extent are people with disabilities able to use these systems?

Taxis, buses, subways, airplanes, and ferries must be optimized to accommodate individuals with disabilities. In fact, one of the most critical needs of people with disabilities is easy access to public transportation services.

Addressing the Educational Needs of People with Disabilities

Although numerous special schools have been established for individuals with disabilities, there remains a significant need to build more schools with diverse facilities. Some researchers believe that integrating individuals with disabilities (those who do not require constant care) into mainstream schools can offer substantial benefits.

This approach not only allows people with disabilities to interact with others in society but also teaches other students how to engage and cooperate with individuals who have disabilities.

Supporting Independent Living for People with Disabilities

One of the primary needs of people with disabilities is achieving independent living. Independent living means that a person with a disability can live comfortably in their own apartment or house without relying on assistance from others or organizations.

Supporting independent living involves financial and psychological support as well as providing necessary equipment tailored to their needs. Of course, this largely depends on the individual’s ability to manage their daily tasks. Nevertheless, many people with disabilities aspire to take steps toward living independently.

Providing Necessary Equipment and Technology for People with Disabilities

Advancements in technology have significantly improved the lives of individuals with disabilities, enabling them to communicate, learn, work, and participate in social and recreational activities.

Modern technology and specialized equipment have always been valuable allies for people with disabilities. However, the high costs of these tools cannot be overlooked. Purchasing items like wheelchairs, walkers, prosthetics, and other assistive devices often requires a substantial budget.

Building Dedicated Pathways for People with Disabilities

While some hospitals, offices, educational institutions, and organizations have implemented pathways specifically for individuals with disabilities, there is still a pressing need for more attention to this matter.

Unfortunately, many sidewalks, recreational areas, buildings, and public spaces lack accessible pathways for people with disabilities. Special measures must be taken to address this essential need and ensure inclusivity in all areas of life.

Supporting Athletes with Disabilities

Have you ever turned on the TV to watch the Paralympic Games? These events are not as well-known as mainstream sports, highlighting the inequality and discrimination between individuals with disabilities and those without.

Supporting disabled athletes and individuals who, despite any limitations, continue to pursue their passions with love and determination is the least we can do for them. Providing opportunities and recognition can inspire not only the athletes but also the broader community.

Combating All Forms of Violence Against People with Disabilities

Unfortunately, many individuals with disabilities become victims of various forms of violence, including physical and psychological abuse. Psychological violence often takes the form of insults that inflict emotional harm and distress.

As members of a global community, we must not remain silent in the face of such acts. Witnessing any form of violence against people with disabilities should prompt action to prevent such occurrences and protect their rights.

What is Our Responsibility Toward People with Disabilities?

Meeting the needs of people with disabilities is a social responsibility that often goes unnoticed. Raising awareness and spreading information about these needs is our duty as members of a global society.

By addressing the challenges and needs of individuals with disabilities, we can make their lives easier, reduce their limitations, and contribute to their mental well-being. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive world for everyone.
